Many of us have heard the term “bad karma” at some point, often used to explain why we face disasters or difficulties in our lives. It can feel like fate is pulling the strings, beyond our control. However, when you find yourself entangled in a challenging relationship, it might be a karmic connection at play.
In the realms of astrology, New Age beliefs, and certain non-Abrahamic religions, the concept of multiple lifetimes is embraced. It suggests that between these lifetimes, we reflect on the lessons learned and consider what experiences we wish to have in the next life. Often, we are attempting to master a lesson that eluded us in a previous existence, and this is where the notion of “karma” arises.
We plan these life experiences, but it is believed that a higher power, be it God or the Spirit, guides us in this planning. However, upon birth, we lose all memory of this divine orchestration.
When events and people enter our lives through coincidences and synchronicities that feel like destiny, it creates a sense of being “chosen but not chosen,” which is what most people refer to as “karma.”
These fated relationships can be categorized into three types, although only one is commonly termed “karmic,” leading to some confusion.

Here are five types of relationships that can either mend or break your heart:
Soulmate Relationship: Soulmates are usually, but not exclusively, romantic partners. They encounter challenges that society tries to impose upon them, but they are meant to be together. Despite these obstacles, they share a beautiful connection filled with love and happiness throughout their lives, once they overcome the challenges. They teach each other valuable lessons in a harmonious way that binds them together for a lifetime.
Classic “Karmic” Relationship: Karmic relationships can be emotionally challenging. They often involve unhealthy dynamics, such as spousal abuse, alcoholism, or codependent-narcissist relationships. In such relationships, one person is an abuser unlikely to change, and the learning opportunity lies with the victim. The victim gradually sees through the lies of abuse, discovering their self-worth in the process. Sometimes, this painful journey has a higher purpose, allowing the survivor to uplift others who have experienced similar hardships.
Twin Flame Relationship: Twin flames are believed to be two individuals originating from the same soul. Whether this concept is true or not, twin flames often experience initially tumultuous relationships. These connections can manifest as friendships, parent-child bonds, or other close relationships. At least one person involved desperately wants the relationship to succeed. Twin flame relationships come in two forms: those that serve as an example to others about true love and those that solely teach the individuals involved.
Twin Flame Relationship as an Example: In this type of twin flame relationship, society is often against the pairing of the couple. Their love story serves as an example to challenge oppressive mindsets, demonstrating that love transcends societal limitations. This can be seen in scenarios such as interracial or LGBTQ+ relationships where love triumphs over societal prejudice.

Lesson Twin Flame Relationship: In lesson twin flame relationships, one partner may be too damaged or abusive to change. Alternatively, the circumstances they find themselves in leave them with no viable choices. These souls are referred to as “twin flames” because both individuals need to learn the same lesson, which is why they came together. These relationships can be fraught with despair and frustration, often leaving permanent emotional scars.
Once you’ve extricated yourself from a karmic relationship, you may realize the unhealthiness of the connection. Understanding the type of relationship you were in can guide your healing process and help redirect your life. Recognizing the lessons you need to learn now can prevent you from repeating similar experiences with the same or similar people in this life or the next. This understanding can inspire personal growth and healing, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling life.
